Why is formal attire important for office-goers?

by Anusha Lal Sinha

In one of the offices where I worked, it required its employees to dress professionally and had a dress code. However, in other offices, it was our free will to dress however we wanted. While both have their perks, I am here to discuss why it is important to dress up professionally in an office setup. Though some companies allow their employees to dress freely or casually for their comfort, dressing up professionally is required for various reasons.

Businesses encourage employees to have formal attire to maintain a professional image of themselves. It is crucial for those organizations where employees interact with clients and business partners regularly. Dressing up formally reflects the professionalism of a company. However, it does not only benefit on an organizational level. It enhances confidence and self-expression in an individual. A well-tailored suit or professional attire is bound to boost self-assurance.

Your appearance is what creates a first impression and it is rightly said that first impression is the last impression! Dressing professionally creates a positive impact on the people we meet in the workplace. It creates a lasting impression on your interviewers, superiors, or upper-level managers who make hiring or promotion decisions. It is a smart decision to dress up professionally in today’s day and age given that the competition is too high and we want to stand out. After communication skills, appearance is the next good quality associated with professionalism as per the 2010 national poll conducted by the Center for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania.

How someone dresses for work is the mirror of his/her personality. Clothes, accessories, and even the footwear one chooses to wear for work impact a lot; it reinforces one’s skill sets in front of employers, clients, and/or colleagues. Although it is not feasible to have a universally acceptable dress code, there are certain rules that one can keep in mind while dressing up for work:

It is easy and inadvertent to dress inappropriately in a workplace. So it is important to make conscious choices while dressing up for work keeping in mind modesty and decency. While there is nothing wrong with a little flattery in what you wear, clothing that shows too much skin or is ill-fitting is inappropriate for the workplace. Therefore, you should avoid plunging necklines, crop tops, sheer fabrics, and open-back dresses.

Choose comfort over fashion, while dressing up for work. The right fit of the attire (not too tight or not too loose) and comfortable shoes are essential as we spend long hours at work.

While many offices follow formal attire on most days, some of them have casual Fridays where one is allowed to dress up casually. Avoiding the fashion faux pas is important, especially on casual Fridays. One needs to avoid wearing garish or too brightly colored outfits such as neon colors, large prints, or heavily embroidered dresses.

It showcases neatness, elegance, and sophistication when you choose clean and neatly ironed formal clothing for the workplace. A well-groomed and formally dressed employee is the flagbearer of the company’s commitment to excellence and attention to detail.

Having a dress code eliminates subjectivity in wardrobe choices. Different employees can have different definitions of casual or formal, so having proper guidelines can be helpful.

The dress code impacts professionalism and creates an atmosphere suitable for work. It indirectly ensures fair treatment and reduces workplace partiality as there will be fewer judgments on the way you look. By having a dress code, employees can focus on their work rather than those superficial differences. It promotes inclusivity and equality within the workplace.

While many would argue that having a dress code restricts individualism, one cannot underestimate the importance of having a formal dress code in a professional environment. It defines a boundary between work and leisure. With formal attire, you can improve your overall professional demeanor and stand tall in a professional setting. So, suit up for your next meeting!
